DRAMA ON PARTS OF SPEECH
INTRODUCTION
For the English language, words can be considered as
the smallest units that have distinctive
meanings. We use thousands of words in
our daily life. Based on the use and
functions, words are categorized into several types of parts of speech, they are:
Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.
The B.Ed trainees from English department of Valiyam
Memorial College of Teacher Education 2016-20118 are going to present a drama
in one of the topics of English Grammar – “PARTS
OF SPEECH”.
The main purpose of presenting this play is to make
clear and understand the concept, use and function of each parts of
speech. Let’s have a look on the eight
types of parts of speech. We hope you
will enjoy and learn the parts of speech through our drama.

SCENE – 1
[An
ante chamber in the King’s palace. King
sentence sitting sadly looking on a photo frame. Queen word enters the chamber]
Queen: [Fousiya]: Dear,
why are you looking so sad?
King
[Mithun]: Nothing
my sweetheart, I was just recalling my last birthday celebration with our
children.
Queen [Fousiya]: (Sighing) Yes, it was very
joyful moment.
King [Mithun]: I wish… we could get that
moments back.
Queen [Fousiya]: Hope, So…
[Both
of them looking at the photo frame of their family]
SCENE – 2
[Minister
enters the chamber]
Minister [Asha Antony] : Your Majesty! May I come in?
King [Mithun]: Yes please.
Minister
[Asha Antony]: Your
Majesty! I have passed all the invitations for your birthday celebration. Here is the list, please check whether anyone
is left as there are few days for your birthday.
King (says sadly) : Oh!
No need of that
Minister: Your Majesty! Is
there any problem?
King: I wish I celebrate
my birthday with my children
Minister: What so issue
about that? You first read to inform and
they will be present the right time before you.
King: Yeah I
know, but this time they already informed me that they will not be coming on
this birthday.
[Minister
and Queen looks at King Sadly]
SCENE – 3
[Messenger
comes to the chamber with delight]
Messenger [Saranya]: Your
Majesty! May I come in.
King: Yes please
Messenger: Your Majesty! You
have a message from your elder daughter noun.
King: Give me
that
[King
reads the message. His face turn to
delight]
King: Oh
my sweet heart! It’s a happy news that
our children comes next week for celebrating my birthday.
Queen: Oh thank God! I’am eagerly waiting to
see all.
[Both
of them look at each other excitedly]
King: Minister!
Arrange all things for our children
Minister: Yes
your Majesty!
[Minister
goes to inform the happy news to the courtiers]
SCENE – 4
[The
next week, the day before King’s birthday, King, Queen waits at the entrance
for the arrival of their kids. The kids
enters the palace. They invite all.]
SCENE – 5
King: Dear
friends and courtiers. This is an
auspicious moment for us our kinds came with their family to celebrate my
birthday.
[An
applause raises]
King: Let my
children introduce themselves.
[King’s
eight children with their family enters the dias]
Noun
[Soumya. S]: Greetings
all. I am noun. I am the first daughter of my parents. I am a naming word. I give names to all. I have seven daughters.
[The
seven daughters enters]
Common
Noun [Deepthy]: I
am the first daughter of Noun. I express
the name of people (eg. Man), things (eg. Books), animals (eg. Monkey) and
places (Church)
Abstract
Noun [Anjana Krishnan]: I am Abstract Noun. I
am the second daughter of Noun. I
specify the name of something that we can only think or feel but cannot touch
and see. (eg. Kindness, Lace, Truth)
Concrete
Noun [Namith]: My
name is Concrete noun. I name for the
persons, places and things, which have physical existence.
(eg.
India, John, Bird, Girl etc.)
Proper
Noun: I
am proper noun. I am a special one among
others as I specify special names of people (Kevin), things (eg. Financial
Times), animals (King Kong) and places (eg. India)
I begins with a capital letter
Countable
Noun: I
am countable noun. I can name things or
persons which can be counted (eg. Trees).
I has pleural form and can be preceded by a, an, or the. (eg. An elephant is a strong animal)
Uncountable
Noun [Arya Anil]: My name is uncountable noun. I am the noun which cannot be counted (eg.
Smoke). I refer to things of a class and
not to place.
(eg. Poetry, News)
Collective
Noun [Soumya. K]: I am collective
noun. I give name for member of
people, things or animals together and treated as one.
(eg. A group of friends, a bunch of
bananas)
Pronoun
[Achala]: I
am pronoun. I am the second daughter of
the King sentence. I help my sister
noun. I am a word that replaces a noun
in a sentence. I refer to a person or
thing without giving the name. I have
three daughters.
Indefinite
Pronoun [Shyja]: I
am indefinite pronoun. I am used in a
general way, without specific reference to persons or things.
(eg. Everybody, none, little, much
etc.)
Relative
Pronoun [Karthika]: I am Relative Pronoun. I am
used to connect a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. I usually seen in complex sentences.
(eg. Which, who, that, where,
whose)
Eg. The answer which you gave is right.
Possessive
Pronoun [Arya. B]: My name is possessive pronoun. I am the youngest one. I always show ownership.
(eg. Mine, ours, yours, his, hers,
its)
Adjective
[Subuhana. A]: I
am Adjective. I am the third child of
King Sentence. I always describes or
clarifies my sister noun. I describe the
noun’s size, colour, age, origin etc.
(eg. It’s a big table.
She is very beautiful)
Verb
(Nainu Shahina): I
am the fourth child of my parents. My
name is verb. I express an action or a
state of being
(eg. Jump, run, swim, walk)
Adverb
[Neethu Sajeev]: I
am adverb and I am the fifth one. I help
my sister verb. I describe or modifies
the verb.
(eg. He run fastly
She writes neatly)
Preposition
[Sumayya]: My
name is preposition. I am the sixth
daughter of my parents. I am the word
placed before my sisters noun and pronoun.
I used to show time, position and direction.
(eg. in, on, at, under, with, to)
My birthday falls in September.
Conjunction
[Tisha]: I
am the seventh daughter of my parents. I
am a word that joins two or more words, phrases or clauses.
(eg. But, or, and, etc.)
I am tired but happy.
Interjection
[Hima Mohan]: I
am Interjection and the eighth and youngest daughter. I am a word that shows emotion or
feelings. I usually come at the
beginning of a sentence.
(eg. Ahh, Alas, Bless you, Bah
etc.)
Ahh!
That feels wonderful.
[Applause
echoed in the room, the children went back to their seats. King enters]
SCENE – 6
King: I
am so happy and proud of my children.
They serves many things to the country English. It’s time to enjoy.
[Everyone
enjoys the part. At the time Minister
takes the family photo of King Sentence.
The new photo puts on the table.]
